ZUNO calls for more investment in Zambia’s workforce

The Zambia Union of Nurses Organisation (ZUNO) says Zambia cannot achieve the desired national development without investing in the workforce through sustainable decent work

The union says social justice is key to ensuring national development and achieving poverty reduction.

In a statement ahead of the Labour Day commemorations on 1 May, 2016, ZUNO General Secretary Fray Michelo, states that by upholding social justice, employers would be promoting fundamental values and rights of employees which include freedom of association, the right to belong to membership trade unions, collective bargaining and protection of employees against discrimination.

Mr Michelo says as the nation prepares to commemorate Labour Day on 1 May, 2016, there is need for employers all over the country to pledge towards creating sustainable and decent employment in the country.

He notes that as a union that represents the majority of the workforce in the health sector, ZUNO is well aware of the people’s aspirations in the work environment.

He furthermore states that workers aspirations include having a fair income, security in the workplace and social protection for families, personal development, freedom to express their concerns in the workplace, and equal job opportunities among others.

Mr. Michelo says his organization is also aware that there are still many graduates seeking employment and that while the nation is addressing unemployment, there is need for all stakeholders to also pay attention to the quality of jobs being offered.
