The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and the Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia (FFTUZ) have expressed concern that the labour movement in Zambia is too fragmented and risk loosing their influence if the situation remains unchecked.

ZCTU Director Public Relations Martin Chembe tells QFM News in a statement that it is for this reason that the two unions have resolved to merge.

Mr. Chembe has explained that the decision was arrived at during a workshop in Chisamba organized by Labour Institute of Zambia (LIZ) with support from the Friedrick Ebert Foundation (FES).

He says it is hoped that once the federations succeed in merging, their affiliate unions will follow the example and this will revitalize and unify the labour movement in the country.

Mr. Chembe says this initiative will enhance effective representation of union members.
