The opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) says the current state of the mining sector in Zambia is perilous and it calls for urgent attention in order to sustain existing operations and avert continuation of the current spate of suspensions and loss of jobs.

FDD Spokesperson Antonio Mwanza says one thing that is shocking is that other countries that depend on Copper as a major export earning are not closing mines as the case is in Zambia.

Mr. Mwanza says Chile and Democratic Republic of Congo are not closing the mines saying they have placed immediate interventions in the wake of the low copper prices on the international market.

He says government should stop deceiving people that the main cause of the job loses in the mining sector is as a result of low copper prices saying if it was so, even in Chile and DRC miners would have lost their jobs.

Mr. Mwanza believes that the problems in the mining sector have persisted because of policy inconsistence by the PF government and high cost of production as a result of the current power deficit.
