GBV, Defilement cases on the rise – VSU

The Zambia Police Service Victim Support Unit (VSU) says Gender Based Violence and Defilement cases are on the rise in most Zambian homes.

VSU Administration Assistant Agnes Chilembo says the country has recorded about 1,095 cases for female and 541 male cases of assault for the third quarter of 2015.

Mrs. Chilembo says about 688 defilement cases and about 57 rape cases have been recorded during the same period.

She has expressed concern that incidents of sexual and gender based violence such as defilement are still high despite interventions from Government and stakeholders.

Mrs. Chilembo says it is also disheartening to note that economic violence has become a common trend in most Zambian homes to settle domestic scores.
She says in most cases husbands take advantage of their economic position to economically abuse their spouses, children and dependents.
