The Zambia Center for Inter Party Dialogue (ZCID) has called on the Zambia Police Service to stop the selective application of the law to political party leaders saying they will create unnecessary tension in the political sphere.

ZCID Executive Director Horrance Chilando says the picking up of opposition FDD President Edith Nawakwi in Kitwe yesterday is a case in point.

Mr. Chilando has narrated to QFM News via telephone that even the ruling party is organizing such meetings and no one from the PF has so far being arrested by the police.

Mr. Chilando says Zambia is a democratic country and any attempt to restrict opposition leaders works against this ideal.

He has urged the police service to always act professionally on the execution of their duties.

He states that the police should not use the excuse of an archaic draconian 18th century law to take away the rights of citizens to assemble and associate.

Mr. Chilando says this is unfair and should not be tolerated in a democratic country like Zambia.

The ZCID Executive Director says the police should therefore withdraw the ‘warn and caution’ statement and instead engage political parties more proactively to prevent such unfortunate events.
