Livingston woman drowns in Zambezi River

A 28 year-old woman drowned in the Zambezi River at Dry Manzi Picnic site in Livingstone on Saturday, 24th October.

The body of Marian Nyendwa has not yet been recovered.

Zambia Wildlife Authority Public Relations Officer Sakabilo Kalembwe says preliminary investigations have revealed that the deceased ignored ZAWA officers’ advice not to the water frontage and found herself up to a kilometer away from where other people were allowed in the picnic area and attempted to cross the river where she met her fate.

Mr Kalembwe has told QFM News in a statement that ZAWA officers, firefighters and Zambia Police are still searching for Nyendwa’s body.

He adds that during this search, two other bodies have been retrieved an indication that people still access the river from other points near the Sun Hotel where ZAWA staff have little access.

Mr Kalembwe has since advised the public to follow park rules when they visit the national park for their own safety.
