No one should be charged to obtain voter’s card – ECZ

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says no one should be charged to obtain a voter’s card.

ECZ Public Relations Manager Crispin Akufuna in a statement says members of the public should be alert and report any malpractices to the Police.

Mr Akufuna says the law will take its course on anyone found engaging in any malpractices during the voter registration exercise.

And Mr Akufuna says a man believed to from Mozambique was arrested after attempting to obtain an NRC and register as a voter at Mankhokwe Primary school in Luangwa district using details of a deceased person.

He says an alert registration officer of the Commission, working hand in hand with officers from the DNRPC responsible for the issuance of NRCs, discovered that the portrait on the voter register was that of a different person after verification of the details of his particulars on the voter’s register.

Mr Akufuna states that further investigation revealed that the ECZ on 21st September 2015 had received from a named person of Simakanda village an application under the registration of the removal of the deceased,the details of the deceased who was reported to have died at Gola Village in Luangwa district.

He says Police in Luangwa have since apprehended the suspect and the brother of the deceased voter.
