Women bank coming – Lungu

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says he will not allow the male-dominance trend in his Cabinet to stop him from appointing women to decision making positions.

President Lungu says heEDGAR CL has take note that each time he appoints a woman in government there appears to be some quiet disapproval from the male members of his Cabinet.

He says he believes women need to be given a chance to take up decision making positions in government.

President Lungu has also vowed to ensure that the women’s voice is not lost out just because a particular Ministry is headed by man.

He says women’s potential requires such harnessing and support through collaborative efforts from him as Head of State and from all other stakeholders.

President Lungu has disclosed that to this effect, the Ministry of Gender and that of Finance are in the process of coming up with a bank for women.

He explains that the objective of this bank, in which women will own shares, is to address the challenges that women entrepreneurs go through in accessing finance to add value to their products and services.

President Lungu was speaking this morning when he graced the official opening of the five days Women Empowerment Expo being held in Lusaka.

And President Lungu has disclosed that in line with government’s desire to empower women especially in rural areas, an inter Ministerial committee has been set up to design empowerment programmes.

He says the aim of this committee, which comprises the Ministries of Gender, Agriculture, Commerce, Trade and Industry, Livestock and Fisheries, Youth, Sport and Child Development, and the Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs, is to ensure that the empowerment programmes impact meaningfully in the area employment and wealth creation at chiefdom level.
