Health Minister Joseph Kasonde says Zambia is committed to speeding up its action on maternal, newborn and child health.

Speaking during the partnership for maternal, newborn and child health media round table discussion in Lusaka today, Dr. Kasonde says tremendous progress has been made towards reducing child mortality, but that there is still more to be done.

Dr. Kasonde notes that despite the progress made in attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the country continues to face obstacles in improving women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health.

He however, states that the country is determined to do more in improving the health of the newborn, adolescents and women particularly at community level.

And Partnership’s Board Chairperson Gracia Machel says as countries transition from the Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals, there is need to increase investment tremendously in maternal, children and adolescent health to the point where the mantra of the SDGs lives no one behind.

Ms. Machel says there is need to scale up organizational capacity and resources and involve every player in the country to make sure that by 2030, all preventable deaths are ended and not reduced.

Mrs. Machel further states that if the SDGs have to be attained, concerted efforts are required from stakeholders, stressing that it is not the duty of the government alone but for all stakeholders.
