ZDDM plans meeting for unpaid SAP retirees

The opposition Zambia Direct Democracy Movement (ZDDM) has disclosed plans of convening a meeting in December this year for retirees and retrenchees who worked for companies that were privatized under the World Bank/ IMF/ Zambian government Structural Adjustment Program (SAP).

ZDDM president Edwin Sakala has disclosed that the meeting will target former workers that worked for parastatal companies like UBZ, ZCBC, Livingstone Motor Assemblies, Zambia State Insurance Corporation, Zambia Airways and the Zambia Olive Company.

Mr. Sakala says his party wants the PF government to investigate how the money meant for the retirees and retrenches of these companies was spent.

He has told Qfm News that this is despite the PF government having just inherited this more than 24 years old problem of the unpaid retirees and retrenchees.

Mr. Sakala says the concern of his party is to end the agony of these former workers that have been shunting from court to court with the hope of getting justice for the money they worked for.

He states that the ZDDM feels that it is wrong for the country to continue pretending that it is not aware that many of its citizens are suffering and dying in poverty due to SAP agreement.
