ZAM happy its proposals have considered in 2016 national budget

The Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) is happy that some of the proposals it made towards the formulation of the 2016 national budget have been considered.

ZAM has taken note that government has reduced excise duty on clear beer from 60 percent to 40 percent.

ZAM Chief Executive Officer Maybin Nsupila says evidence on the need to reduce excise duty on clear beer supports his association’s thinking.

Mr. Nsupila has told Qfm News that his association’s argument in making this proposal was that when excise duty is high on clear beer government makes less money.

He says this is because the bulk of the imported clear beer is smuggled and therefore imposing a high excise duty on this commodity only increases the premium for smuggling while consumption of locally brewed clear beer, which becomes more expensive, loses market share.

Mr. Nsupila states that manufactures are also happy that government has introduced 40 percent export tax on raw timber and also introduced 20 percent export tax on semi processed timber.

He says ZAM is of the view this is move will encourage local production of value added timber products especially given the investments that is now coming in the wood processing sector.
