Lungu rules out economic indaba

EL ArrivesRepublican President Edgar Lungu has castigated some opposition political party leaders politicizing his declaration of 18th October as the national day of prayer and fasting, saying they should be serious with things of God.

And the Head of State says he is working tirelessly to ensure that the local currency regains its strength against major currencies as seen from the latest performance of the kwacha on the market.

Speaking to journalists upon arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport from New York where he had gone for the UN General Assembly, President Lungu says there is need for political players to respect his call for prayer and fasting.

President Lungu states that the perception by some politicians that he is running away from his duties by calling for such events is misleading as his call for prayer and fasting is genuine and that he means well.

He says he is providing leadership both on the political and economic frontiers and that there is no need to doubt him in anyway.

The Head of State says his calling for prayers does not mean he has failed in any way to provide leadership, but that the country needs to seek the face of God.

And the President has emphasized that he has not failed to contain the volatility of the kwacha, stating the local currency is slowly gaining its strength against the US Dollar.

President Lungu says there is therefore no need to call for an indaba on the economic situation because such gatherings have in the past failed to yield positive results.

He states that he is tirelessly working with technocrats in government as well as the private sector to arrest the volatility of the kwacha.

President Lungu, who touched down at KK International Airport at 09:40 aboard a private jet, was received by Vice President Inonge Wina, Defence Minister Richwell Siamunene, Home Affairs Minister, Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Sturdy Mwale, defence chiefs among other government and party officials.
