PMRC links weak Kwacha to widening deficit in current account

Policy Monitoring and Research Centre (PMRC) says the deterioration of Zambia’s balance of payment is a reflection of the widening deficit in its current account.

The PMRC which is a nonprofit research and analysis think tank has observed that the country is therefore vulnerable to developments in the global economy.

The PMCR has taken note that internal and external economic factors have exerted pressure on the Zambian economy in the second half of 2015, thereby affecting the value of the Kwacha.

It has observed that both traditional and non-traditional exports have also declined significantly and that imports have equally declined at a slower pace.

The PMRC says as a result, the Kwacha has been on a depreciating trend.

It notes that this given the fact that Zambia earns most of its foreign income through copper exports.

This contained in a statement of latest analysis on the state of the Zambian Kwacha released to Qfm News today.
