Kabanana K2M water project commissioned

The Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company, with financial support from Devolution Trust Fund (DTF), has commissioned the K2 million water and sanitation project in Lusaka’s Kabanana area which will service about 1, 105 households.

The specific works to be undertaken under this project will include construction of new water distribution networks of approximately 13.2 kilometers, rehabilitation and installation of a 305 thousand liters water tank.

Speaking shortly before commissioning the project in Lusaka today, Mandemvu PF Member of Parliament Jean Kapata says government is working tirelessly to improve the water infrastructure in various parts of Lusaka.

Ms Kapata says this includes the new water treatment plant that will be constructed in Kafue at a total cost of US$150 million with the capacity to treat about 50 million liters per day.

Ms Kapata, who is also Tourism and Arts Minister, says this will be accompanied by the new line which will be 65 kilometers from Kafue into Lusaka under the Kafue Bulk Water project.

She says she is pleased that when government embarked on infrastructure development through the Devolution Trust Fund (DTF), Kabanana was also considered.

She adds that about 1.2 million people are expected to benefit from the Lusaka Water Supply, Sanitation and Drainage Project funded by the American government to improve water, sanitation and drainage works in Lusaka.

Speaking earlier, Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company Managing Director George Ndongwe says the K2 million Kabanana Water Project, once completed, will contribute towards general improvement of lifestyle through the provision of clean and sustainable water services, in line with the company’s mission of providing quality water and sanitation services.

Mr. Ndongwe says due to the rapid expansion of Lusaka City and the corresponding increased demand for water supply and sewerage services, Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company cannot service all the areas on time and thus the need to expand services.

Speaking at the same occasion, Devolution Trust Fund (DTF) Managing Director Samuel Gonga says Zambia is among the African countries that are fast becoming highly urbanized as can be witnessed by the unprecedented levels of housing development and general construction in most towns.
