The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has commended Government for approving the creation of the Education Loans Institution to replace the bursary scheme.

YALI President Andrew Nthewewe says the bursary scheme has lamentably failed, and has been used as a conduit of corruption, bribery and nepotism and was unsustainable as the funds were not revolving.

Mr. Nthewewe notes that the educational loans will ensure that students pay back to the government after they graduate and get employed which in turn will help in the economic growth of the nation.

He has since appealed to the government to put measures in place that will ensure that the procedure of obtaining the loan is not long and complicated, but simplified, clear and transparent so that no issues of corruption, bribery and other negative vices arise.

He adds that unlike the case has been with the bursary scheme where it has been difficult for certain people to get bursary, with the loan scheme, anyone who qualifies should be able to access the loan as they will still pay back the money.

Mr. Nthewewe further states that for the education loans to be effective, government must have a focal plan that will help provide jobs to those who will access the loans so that they are employed after graduation to enable them pay back.
