PRINCESS Diana tragically lost her life 18 years ago today.

She was laid to rest on Althorp Estate in Northamptonshire, where a memorial stands on an island.

But, today it emerged that the ‘neglected’ special spot is now covered by trees and bushes – with moss growing around statues.

Her personal chef, who spoke out about the state of the site only last year, said: “PLEASE tidy up the vegetation on the island @AlthorpEstate Prove you wanted #PrincessDiana there through love and not just to make money.”

Darren McGrady, who worked for her and her sons at Kensington Palace for four years and now lives in Texas, even wrote a blog post describing the state if it.

“The lake was full of algae and the trees and bushes on the island were an overgrown mess looking like they had never been trimmed since the day she was buried on the island.

“Even the memorial with blistered paint looked more like a ‘tatty old garden shed at the bottom of the garden’ than a shrine to the most photographed woman in the world,” he added.

The famous estate was Princess Di’s home before she married Prince Charles, when she was only 21, in 1981.

A spokesperson for Althorp said: “We have 14 ‘Planting Stones’ in the Park, and they all become parts of the ancient landscape over time, rather than being scrubbed clean.

“The algae was present last year because of that summer’s exceptional heat – something that has not recurred this year.
