Zesco United beat Konkola Blades 1-0 at home on Sunday to maintain their seven-point lead at the top of the Faz Super League table.

The win also extended Zesco’s unbeaten run to 12 matches and the defending champions trace their last league defeat to June 14 when they were beaten 2-1 at home in a Ndola derby by promoted Forest Rangers.

Zesco’s winning goal against Blades came in the second half from Kenya defender David Owino after a modest first 45 minutes at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Owino headed-in midfielder Justin Zulu’s free-kick in the 55th minute before flying out to Nairobi on Monday ahead of this Sunday’s 2017 Africa Cup qualifier against the country of his employers Zambia.

Blades, meanwhile, had a great chance to equalise in the 78th minute wasted when striker Graven Chitalu hit the post after eluding Zesco goalkeeper Jacob Banda.

Zesco striker Winston Kalengo too hit the post five minutes later to deny the 2015 top scorer a chance of extending his tally to 12 goals.

The four-time champions rise to 52 points ahead of second-placed Power Dynamos who have 45 points with eight games left before the 2015 title is decided.

Blades are fourth from bottom inside in the relegation zone in 13th place on 22 points from as many games played.
