Kapata allays fears of Lions extinction

Tourism Minister Jean Kapata has allayed fears that the lifting of the hunting ban on big cats will deplete the animals from the game parks.

Ms. Kapata explains that the reason the hunting of lions and leopards was suspended was because they were weak regulations surrounding their hunting.

She says stringent measures have since been put in place address the weaknesses.

Ms. Kapata says previously people could hunt up to five lions, but that this will no longer be the case as a license holder will not be allowed to hunt more than two lions.

She adds that only two lions will be hunted per block, while 46 lions will be hunted per hunting period.

Ms Kapata further states that the big cats will not depleted because the country has a lot of them.

She adds that only older male lions will be hunted and not young ones that are less than five years.

Ms. Kapata states that Zambia has always hunted big cats just like neighboring countries have also done and that there is nothing that should worry stakeholders.
