Women for Change condemn stripping of woman

Women for Change has strongly condemned and described as barbaric the stripping naked, torture and beating up of a young woman by thugs at Kulima Tower bus station for purportedly wearing what they perceived as indecent.

Executive Lumba Siyanga says her organisation is deeply appalled by the action taken by the thugs which was a violation of fundamental rights of the victim of her rights to dignity, privacy and freedom.

Ms Siyanga notes that such acts of mob justice are a manifestation of the growing lawlessness and mob justice since they threaten the fundamental principles of human rights and respect for the rule of law.

She states that violence in the form of booing, physical assaulting and stripping women and girls naked, regardless of what they are wearing are abuse against women and girls which are aimed at instilling fear, demeaning, humiliation and intimidation in them regardless of what they put on, restrict women’s and girl’s freedoms.

Ms Siyanga says Women for Change is calling upon government to fully implement the Anti-Gender based Violence (GBV) Law of 2011 to prevent all forms of violence against women and girls.

She adds that her organisation also calls upon the Government to quickly enact the final draft constitution through a national referendum to ensure full protection of women and girls rights.

Mr Siyanga says the proposed piecemeal amendments of the current constitution is not welcome as it will further delay the enjoyment and protection of women and girls rights as proposed in the final draft constitution.
