Depleting fish stock in Lake Mweru worries Sub-chief Natende

Sub-chief Natende of Chiengi District in Luapula Province Katele Kalumba has noted the urgent need to improve fish farming in Lake Mweru that borders Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Sub-Chief Natende says the potential for improved fish farming on the main water body of Lake Mweru is as good as that of Lake Kariba in Southern province.

He has told Qfm News that the people of Luapula province would like to learn the best practices of fish farming being employed at Lake Kariba.

The traditional leader states that this is especially that various species of fish stocks in Lake Mweru are depleting owing to bad fishing methods.

He says this is besides over fishing which has been triggered by population growth.

Sub- Chief Natende notes that the population of fishermen and the demand for fish from the lake have both increased.
