Protesters in Lusaka against xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa this morning defied Police and marched to the South African High Commission to protest against the attacks.

Police had earlier directed that the protest should not go ahead.

The peaceful protesters who were carrying placards some reading “I’m African, South Africa it’s the 21st century study civilization, abash killing and stop persecution” marched from Cross Roads Shopping Mall before Police stopped them at the gate of the South African High Commission.

The protesters were made to retreat to Cross Roads Shopping Mall to continue with their protest after Police threatened to arrest them.

One of the protest leaders Senzo Mkwanazi has called on the Zambian government to emulate their counterparts in Malawi and Mozambique who have taken measures to register their disappointment over the attacks in South Africa.

He says the Zambian government should consider recalling the country’s High Commissioner to South Africa and other diplomatic staff in protest at the xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals.

Mkwanazi says they will continue with their protest until the xenophobic attacks in South Africa are stopped.
