CSPR advises govt to use current maize stock prudently

The Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) in Eastern Province has advised the government to guard and use the current maize stock prudently.

CSPR Eastern Province Coordinator Maxson Nkhoma says it is important that government uses the maize stock wisely considering that most parts of the country have recorded dry spells.

Mr. Nkhoma says there is need for the government to ensure that all the maize bought from farmers through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) is safeguarded.

He says it is very clear that the country will not record good yields this year therefore government should move in quickly and open the FRA market to avoid a situation where a few of the farmers who may record a good harvest will sale it businessmen from neighboring countries hit by floods such Malawi and Mozambique.

He says there is need to store enough maize stocks in the reserve so that in case some parts of the country record hunger they can utilize the stocks in the reserve.

Mr. Nkhoma says it is for this reason that he feels government should ensure that they step up efforts in safeguarding the maize stock.
