Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has thanked the fans at Anfield for holding him back during his on-field confrontation with Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.

Balotelli and Smalling almost traded blows when they collided on the touchline during Sunday’s fixture, with the Reds striker falling into the advertising boards. Before Balotelli could do something he would later regret, the fans around him held him back, preventing an altercation.

While he was disappointed that Liverpool lost the match 2-1, Balotelli expressed his gratitude to the fans for helping him keep out of trouble.

“Besides all efforts the game didn’t go our way,” Balotelli posted on his Facebook page. “But one thing was real clear: I wasn’t alone on the pitch. YNWA.”

Due to the loss, Liverpool remain in fifth spot on the Premier League standings and are five points adrift of the top four.
