FAWEZA disturbed by Kalabo pupils abortion figures

Forum for African Women Educationalists in Zambia (FAWEZA) is deeply disturbed and concerned with the report indicating that over 30 pupils abort pregnancies every month in Kalabo district.

FAWEZA National Coordinator Agness Shipanuka says this calls for progressive measures for girls to receive adequate sexual reproductive health information.

Ms. Shipanuka notes that much as FAWEZA acknowledges that the girl’s educational policy environment in the country is good, implementation still remains a challenge.

She says it is sad that girls have continued to engage themselves in premarital sex and even go a step further by aborting.

Ma Shipanuka states that abortion is a sin which should not be encouraged even when a girl falls pregnant at a tender age.

Ms. Shipanuka has urged girls to concentrate on their education and to stay away from sexual activities because this has the potential to ruin their future.

She has further called on government and other stakeholders to enhance sexual reproductive health awareness to school going children and ensure that girls have the relevant information that they need to help them stay away from sexual activities.

A report from Kalabo district hospital has revealed that about 30 girls are involved in abortion every month.
