Police officers keep vigil at Woodlands Police Station this morning

Police have recorded a warn and Caution statement from UPND president Hakainde Hichilema over the statement he made during a media briefing on 25th February,2015.

Mr. Hichilema has been Warned and Cautioned under Cap 111 of the State Security Act over his revelations that he accesses intelligence information before President Edgar Lungu does and for alleging that President Lungu has secured US$10 million to destabilize the UPND and further that the President had hired people to investigate the source of funding for the UPND during campaigns for the January 20th presidential election.

Police Spokesperson Charity Munganga Chanda has disclosed that Mr. Hichilema who was summoned at Lusaka’s Woodlands Police station this morning opted to remain silent during the interrogation that took almost an hour.

Ms. Chanda who could not confirm whether the UPND leader risks any possible arrest, has told journalists that investigations into the matter will continue.

She has also explained that Police had been doing its ground work from the time Mr. Hichilema made the revelations and that the President’s order for them to investigate Mr. Hichilema has only coincided with the conclusion of its ground work on the matter.

And speaking shortly after he was Warned and Cautioned, Mr. Hichilema’s lawyer Jack Mwiimbu told journalists that the UPND leader has denied what is being alleged he said.

Mr. Mwiimbu who is also UPND Monze Member of Parliament says his party is particularly dismayed by how the PF government is handling Mr. Hichilema’s issue.

He says this is because before being sworn in as President, Mr Lungu had pledged not to interfere in the operations of the country’s investigative wings as he has done by instructing the Police to investigate the UPND leader.

Mr. Mwiimbu states that the hope of his party is that the Police will however investigate this issue professionally.
