Human Rights Commission impressed with Lungu’s stance on POA

The Human Rights Commission says it takes seriously the public commitment by Republican President Edgar Lungu to uphold the Rule of Law and his open invitation to all Stakeholders to contribute to the revision of the Public Order Act.

Commission Director Florence Chibwesha says the Commission has identified several inadequacies in the law and will join other stakeholders in making proposals to the Minister of Justice Ngosa Simbyakula.

In congratulating President Lungu on his election as the sixth President of Zambia,Ms Chibwesha the Commission remains optimistic that under President Lungu’s leaderships, Zambia will continue to uphold fundamental freedoms and other rights that people in Zambia are entitled to as guaranteed by the Constitution and international human rights standards.

She says respect for human rights is one of the cornerstones of democracy, without which no democratic governance is possible.

Ms Chibwesha says the Commission, therefore, is keen to see enactment of the new Constitution as pronounced by the President in his inaugural speech on Sunday 25th January 2015 at National Heroes Stadium that will guarantee enhanced protection of human rights over and above civil and political rights.

She has since wished President Lungu success in the administration of the affairs of the country.
