Women movement hails Wina’s appointment

The women movement in the country has commended Republican President Edgar Lungu for appointing Inonge Wina as Zambia’s first female Republican Vice President.

NGOCC Board Chairperson Sarah Longwe has told QFM News in an interview that the NGOCC is pleased that President Lungu has considered a woman for such a high position.

Ms Longwe has since called on women in the country to support Ms Wina saying she needs the support of her fellow women.

She states that President Lungu should also consider appointing more women in higher positions so that they too can be part of decision making.

And Zambia National Women’s Lobby Chairperson Beauty Katebe has told QFM News in a separate interview that her organization is pleased that President Lungu has bridged the gap by appointing a female Republican Vice President.

Ms Katebe says Ms Wina will have all the support she needs from the women movement in the country.

She adds that the women movement is proud of Ms Wina and is hopeful that she will help to address issues affecting women.

And Women for Change Chairperson Margaret Maimbolwa has described the appointment of Ms Wina as a Golden Jubilee present to the Zambian women.

Dr Maimbolwa says her organisation is hopeful that President Lungu will appoint more women to leadership positions as the country endeavors to meet the Southern African Development Community (SADC) requirement.

She adds that Women for Change is confident that Ms Wina will take cognisance of the voice of women who are key stakeholders in the development of Zambia.

Dr Maimbolwa states that her organisation believes that sustainable development can only be achieved in a country where both women and men are recognized.

She has also congratulated President Lungu on his election as Zambia’s sixth President and has wished him success.

And the Women and Law in Southern Africa says it is excited with the appointment of Ms Wina as Zambia’s first woman Vice President.

WLSA National Coordinator Maureen Samulela says her organisation has been advocating for more women to be appointed in leadership position.

Ms Samulela says this is in line with provisions of the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development and the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women which Zambia has signed and ratified.

She adds that WLSA looks forward to more appointments of women in Cabinet and other leadership positions.
