The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has expressed concern that some Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Zambia are getting involved in partisan politics and active campaigns for political candidates.

YALI Governance Advisor Isaac Mwanza says even if he believes in the right of NGOs to criticize government and politicians, he also believes that civil society organizations must avoid the temptation of engaging in active partisan politics that favor one candidate against another.

Mr. Mwanza states that his organization will not join in campaigns aimed at undermining any candidate in Zambia’s electoral process irrespective of the fact that they may hold views that are different from those being championed by presidential candidates.

He takes cognizant of the fact that taking political positions compromises legitimacy and creditability of civil society and enhances suspicion which breeds lack of trust and impair relations for mutual understanding and respect.

Mr. Mwanza has told QFM News in an interview that this can lead to disharmony which, eventually, would negatively affect citizens that civil society must be representing.

He believes that the role of NGOs is to hold government accountable on the promises made but not necessarily to decampaign a political party.

He says NGOs must act as a consultative forum by providing researched and properly analyzed data and information for the betterment of the people.

The YALI Governance Advisor has since called on Zambian voters to exercise their independent judgment on January 20 by voting for a Presidential candidate based on the issues he or she may articulate and not based on secret agendas that may be advanced by some stakeholders who may seek to promote their own interests.
