The Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has described 2014 as a year of mixed fortunes for farmers with many ups and downs which has entailed survival of the fittest.

In her end of year message,ZNFU President Evelyn Nguleka says as farmers constantly strive to make adjustments in order to remain in business, government is an important partner in addressing policy induced cost centers and other external factors which farmers’ have no control over.

Dr Nguleka says already, the rainy season has delayed so much and farmers have lamented that this is the worst late rains ever seen in many years if not in 100 years which could be a sign of an uncertain farming season yet investment in massive irrigation has remained at the back burner of the agriculture agenda.

She points out that maintaining genuine dialogue is key to avoid springing surprises on farmers but also for government to benefit from farmers’ own solutions because when farming business thrives, the multiple positive effects are shared by the entire chain including government and society at large through improved livelihood, food security or put simply through improved access to basic needs.

Dr Nguleka adds that lasting policy options are required to propel the maize industry to eliminate the up and down maize production patterns hence the limited participation of the private sector in maize marketing in 2014 is a paradox worthy immediate investigation so that future policies can mitigate against this and avoid a repeat in future.

She points out that one new measure which should be followed through with vigour is implementation of the Ware House Receipt System.

The ZNFU President has since congratulated the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock for finally signing the legal instrument to appoint a warehouse licensing agency.
