EU commits 64 million Euros towards Kariba Dam rehab

The European Commission has committed 64 million Euros towards the Kariba Dam rehabilitation project.

The commission has also announced the adoption of the 2014 Annual Action Programme for Zambia.

EU Ambassador to Zambia Gilles Hervio says in line with the 11th European Development Fund National Indicative Programme for Zambia and the Zambian Revised Sixth National Development Plan, the European Commission is supporting the increased access to clean and reliable energy for the Zambian population.

Mr Hervio e says this is illustrated by the commitment of 64 million Euros to go towards the rehabilitation of the Kariba Dam, generating close to 50% of electricity in Zambia.

Mr. Hervio notes that after 50 years in operation, the dam requires rehabilitation works for its continued safe operation.

He says the works will include stopping erosion of rocks close to the dam foundations and refurbishing the gates to regulate the water level of Lake Kariba.

Mr Hervio says the project is co-financed with the African Development Bank, Sweden and the World Bank.

The EU Ambassador to Zambia says the Kariba Dam rehabilitation project marks the beginning of the EU long term commitment to improve access to electricity for the people of Zambia.

He states that over the next 6 years, the EU intends to mobilize 240 million Euros for the sole development of the energy infrastructure including the extension of the grid to bring electricity to more people in the country.
