Next govt should mitigate effects of high food prices -ZACA

The Zambia Consumers Association (ZACA) says the next government should find better ways of mitigating the effects of high food prices which have contributed to increasing hunger among the citizens.

ZACA Executive Secretary Samuel Simitunda says the basic food items are becoming expensive and has since called for an urgent response to address the cost of food.

Mr. Simitunda says it is unfortunate that even though the 2013/2014 farming season recorded a bumper harvest, the price of mealie meal is still beyond the reach of many people.

He says the current average cost of mealie meal pegged between K70 and K80 is too high for the ordinary Zambians who were struggling with high levels of unemployment.

He says if measures are not put in place by the next government, the people of Zambia would start buying mealie meal at an even higher price.

Mr. Simitunda says there is serious need for reorganization of the agriculture industry which he has described as a letdown to farmers in its current state.

He adds that poor planning in the agriculture sector is unacceptable as poor Zambian farmers are the ones left to deal with the problems.
