DEC arrests Lusaka miraa woman traffickers

The Drug Enforcement Commission in Eastern Province has arrested and separately charged two women of Lusaka for trafficking in miraa.

Commission Spokesperson Theresa Katongo says Joyce Nakanyika, 49, a peasant farmer of Mandevu Compound in Lusaka has been arrested for trafficking in 317 bundles of miraa weighing 106kg and Mayies Ofwa, 51, of the same abode for trafficking in 285 bundles of miraa weighing 106.4kg.

Ms Katongo says the duo was intercepted at Luangwa Bridge.

And in a related but separate incidence, the Commission in Muchinga Province has arrested and jointly charged two male Tanzanian nationals and two female Zambians for trafficking in 40 bundles of miraa.

Ms Katongo says Rashid Bakari Mbaruku, 20, of Tanga area in Tanzania has been arrested and jointly charged with Hassan Athumawi, 34, a Cook of the same abode, Miniva Nansungwe, 23, a house wife of Mukoma village and Carol Kalemwa, 22, a house wife of Chiyanga village in Nakonde District for trafficking in 40 bundles of miraa weighing 16.2kg.

Meanwhile the Commission has arrested forty seven (47) people countrywide for trafficking in various quantities of cannabis.
