YALI maintains earlier stance on referendum

Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has maintained that the country must consider hosting a referendum for adopting the new constitution along the 2016 general elections.

And YALI has commended Government for finally releasing the Final Draft Constitution saying it is a step in the right direction.

YALI Governance Advisor Isaac Mwanza has told QFM News in an interview that while the release is welcome, it has been the view of YALI that the release of the final draft Constitution must have been accompanied with a clear roadmap.

Mr. Mwanza has therefore called on Members of Parliament from both the ruling and opposition party to take the release of the Final Draft as an opportunity to get answers from government on when government intends to bring to an end this important process.

He thinks that releasing the Draft Constitution must not be deemed as a gift to the Zambian people but Government can give the Zambian people a real gift by giving them a new Constitution.

Mr. Mwanza adds that this requires that the road map must now be agreed and Parliament must, as a matter of urgency, put in place a legal framework that will protect the Constitution.

Mr. Mwanza says during this time that Zambians now have access to an authentic copy of the draft constitution; his organization is asking all citizens to begin to examine its contents with care.
