Zambia turns 50

Zambia has today Friday the 24th of October turned 50 years of Independence from colonial rule.

The 50 years of independence which also has a biblical meaning and sense of for the Christians Jubilee has been observed in the country with praise and thanksgiving to God for the peace, prosperity and unity that the country has been enjoying in the last 50 years it has been independent.

And Acting President Edgar Lungu, this morning lead dignitaries and defense service chiefs in laying wreaths at the freedom statue in Lusaka as part of commemoration of Zambia’s Jubilee

Mr. Lungu, who was in company of cabinet ministers and other senior government officials, paid   special tribute to the freedom fighters that fought for Zambia’s independence in 1964.

The Jubilee ceremony of paying tribute to freedom fighters at the freedom statue, which started at nine o’clock, also attracted Zambians from all walks of life who wanted to have a glimpse of the ceremony.

First republican president Kenneth Kaunda was also part of the people that laid wreath.

Ambassadors and high commissioners for various countries were also present. Meanwhile former South African president Thabo Mbeki received a thunderous cheer by spectators that flocked the freedom statue while he made his way to his car after at the finish of the ceremony.

Among opposition political party leaders that attended the laying of wreaths include Movement for multi party democracy (MMD) president Nevers Mumba, National Restoration Party (NAREP) president Elias Chipimo junior and Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) president Edith Nawakwi.

And information and Broadcasting Minister who is also Chief government spokesperson  Joseph Katema  has commended  Zambians  for turning up in large  numbers to celebrate Zambia’s golden  jubilee  with love  for another and  unity.
