Janza axes Christopher Katongo

2012 Africa Cup winning captain Christopher Katongo has been dropped by Zambia coach Honour Janza.

The 32-year-old striker left Zambia camp in Ndola on Monday where the team is preparing for Wednesday’s 2015 Africa Cup Group F qualifier against Niger to be played there at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

Zambia team manager Lusekelo Kamwambi said Katongo has been dropped by Janza for what he termed as in the interest of team spirit and unity.

“Coach Honour Janza in a bold move aimed at boosting team spirit and unity in Chipolopolo has released captain Christopher Katongo from camp,” Kamwambi said.

“Janza intends to make drastic changes to the squad to face Niger on Wednesday and therefore he wishes to spare the blushes of the captain that might arise from his possible omission from the team.”

Katongo has been an integral part of the Zambia setup since 2004.

However, the striker has been a part player in Janza’s team in particular Zambia’s last two Group F qualifiers.

Katongo came on half-way through the first half of Zambia’s 2-1 away loss to Cape Verde on September 10 and later in the 78th minute of last Saturday’s scoreless draw away against Niger.
